SUCCESS STORIES

MELODY MMBONE
Background
Melody is a 21 year old girl who sells snacks (bhajia and samosas) across the road in their neighborhood in Kawangware Muslim area. She sells her snacks in the morning and evening and hawks ladies’ clothes during the day. She is the third born in a family of seven. She does these businesses in order to help her mum provide for their basic needs.
Challenge
Her major challenge was getting reasonable portions of supplies in this snacks business. Often she would sent her customers away saying that they should come the following day for the snacks since she would prepare a little +portion which couldn’t be displayed for long before passer bye’s would buy all of them.
OCF Intervention
OCF intervened by buying for her these consumables from a local wholesalers shop nearby. This doubled her daily profit from 100 to 200 shillings and she also says she no longer feels disturbed or stressed In her day to day running of her business. Receiving OCF support has enabled her to open her business both in the morning and evening unlike before where she used to open only in the evening since she was not in a capacity to open at the both times.
Conclusion
Melody is really grateful for the OCF Inua Binti seed grant support and is looking forward to her business expansion.
This training builds the capacity of women groups (known as “chamas’’) to transform existing small-scale businesses to profitable ventures. We also intend to initiate new venture ideas to expand business opportunity through programs and activities relating to women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. New chamas are enrolled into an ongoing business leadership, financial literacy training of trainers and mentorship Programme.
